“The Gift of Music” – A Heartwarming Collaborative Charity Concert at
Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS)
Orphanage children and terminally ill youth take the stage in a powerful celebration of music, mentorship, and hope
Jakarta, 4 May 2025
Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS) resonated with joy, harmony, and heartfelt emotion during “The Gift of Music”, a collaborative charity concert held on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Organized by the Strings in Action student service club in partnership with Make-A-Wish Foundation Indonesia, the concert brouJIS high schoolght together musicians and over 50 children from Kasih Mandiri, Abigail, and Pondok Taruna orphanages, performing side by side after months of rehearsals, lessons, and shared growth.
More than just a musical performance, the event was a profound testament to the transformative power of music and mentorship. “Over the past few months, we’ve spent countless afternoons sitting side by side with the kids—helping them figure out finger placements, reading music sheets together, and encouraging them through every squeaky note and breakthrough moment,” shared Stella Marsha Widodo, student leader of the Strings in Action club.
“Many of them had never even touched an instrument before. Seeing them now—performing with pride and joy—is one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had.”
Founded in 2015, Strings in Action is a student-led initiative that provides free music education to children from underserved communities.
At JIS, the club invites children from partner orphanages to campus each week for hands-on instruction in violin, viola, and cello. These sessions focus not only on musical skills but also on building confidence, friendships, and the joy of learning in a nurturing environment.
The current student leaders—Abelando Susiarjo, Marsha Widodo, and Kieran Hudaya—have helped expand the program’s reach and impact within the school community.
The concert repertoire featured a dynamic blend of classical, contemporary, and Indonesian pieces, with both string and wind ensembles performing in harmony with their service partners. One of the evening’s most moving moments came when Almira, an 11-year-old child with a critical illness, took the stage to sing—fulfilling her dream through Make-A-Wish Indonesia. Her performance brought many in the audience to tears and served as a powerful reminder of the evening’s deeper purpose.
Yandri Enang, Music Director and Advisor to the program, emphasized the long-term value of this initiative,“This concert reminds us that music is not only about technique—it’s about belonging. It fosters self-esteem, focus, joy, and most importantly, it creates a space where young people feel seen, supported, and celebrated.”
Proceeds from the concert will support Strings in Action’s outreach music programs and help expand the initiative by purchasing more string instruments for children from orphanages.
By the final note, The Gift of Music had become far more than a concert—it was a vivid demonstration of music’s power to dissolve barriers, forge friendships, and amplify hope. In a world so often divided, this evening reminded us that music is one of the rare gifts that can truly bring people together—one note, one child, one shared song at a time. ###
